Chinese Skullcap (Scutellaria baicallensis)

Chinese Skullcap, often referred to Baikal Skullcap, is one of the fifty herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine. It’s use dates back more than two thousand years.

Chinese Skullcap is commonly used for treating headache, fevers, infection, allergies, diarrhea, and inflammation. It is also said to have cancer-fighting properties, but more research is necessary to fully understand how it actually helps. Research has found that the intake of this herb is a good way of reducing symptoms related to hypertension.

This use of this herb for fever, cough, gastro-intestinal, and urinary problems. have been supported by clinical trials in China.

Although Chinese skullcap herb is recommended for diabetics, it should be used only after consulting with a medical doctor as it can lower a blood sugar levels, giving rise to the problem of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

It also protects the brain and is effective in healing brain tissue after injury. It inhibits tumor growth, is an antioxidant, and has anti-viral properties. Helps the metabolism to improve fat processing and boosts hormones used in digestion. Also used to treat non-alcoholic liver disease.

This herb can be found dried, as a tincture, or powdered in capsules.
